- The Roman Catholic doctrine that the whole substance of the bread and the wine changes into the substance of the body and blood of Christ when consecrated in the Eucharist.
- An act that changes the form or character or substance of something.
How much is translation an act of transubstantiation? How about transmutation:
- An act that changes the form or character or substance of something.
- A qualitative change.
We could go on and on – Derrida-like – never reaching our final sign or synonym but wander aimlessly forever searching for the correct definition. Alas, that’s what translation is all about. Ho hum…
